Parents Helping Parents was founded in 1976 in San Jose,
California and is one of the oldest and largest children's
charities of its kind in the United States. It is a parent-directed family
resource center serving children with special
needs, their families, and the professionals who serve them. It has a number
of satellite programs and affiliates, one
of which is located in Southern California on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
The Southern California/South Bay PHP program is a non-profit organization
that has been in operation since 1992. It
is run solely through the effort of community volunteers, most of whom are
parents of children with a variety of disabilities
and learning differences. Consequently, the focus of the local organization
reflects the makeup of the volunteers who
serve it at a given time. Presently, there is a great emphasis on assisting
parents and families of children with Learning
Disabilites and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. |
